In 2003, EGCA members capitalized the Scholarship endowment with over $125,000 to assure perpetuation of the annual college scholarships. In the following years, EGCA's membership has continued to very generously support this program.

The Seven Scholarships
Three $3,000 scholarships offered to students currently enrolled in or who have applied to and been accepted in San Diego State University's J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program.
Two $1,500 scholarships offered to Palomar College Students enrolled in the Palomar College Diesel Technology Associates Degree Program, or high school seniors who have applied to and been accepted in this program in the fall of this year.
Seven highly qualified students received a total of $16,000 in EGCA’s 2011 Scholarship Program.
For the fourth consecutive year,
Trench Shoring Company hosted the annual
Scholarship/Awards Program. In lieu of
receiving a sponsor trophy, Trench Shoring
Company requested that a donation in the
company’s name be made to Father Joe’s
Villages—a tradition it started when the
company hosted last year’s program. In
welcoming everyone to the Trench Shoring
San Diego facility and acknowledging
the Trench Shoring team that provided the
manpower to change a busy trench shoring
facility into a banquet hall, Don Herring,
Trench Shoring Company’s San Diego
branch manager, set the perfect mood for
the evening’s upbeat, sometimes sentimental,
sometimes emotional atmosphere.
Bob Johnson, a long-time employee and friend of the Sjobom family, wrote this tribute to Chick and Mark and asked that it be shared at the June 9 awards event, where Mark and his dad, the late Chick Sjobom, received the EGCA Honorees Award. Scholarship Committee member Tom Hogarty, Hogarty Communications, read the following heartfelt observances from Bob Johnson to an attentive audience.
Five worthy students received a total of $25,000 from EGCA's 2009 Scholarship Program.
Trench Shoring Company, host of the June EGCA General Membership Meeting—which included EGCA’s annual presentation of scholarships—provided the presenter for both the $10,000 and $5,000 scholarships to students now enrolled in or about to enter San Diego State University’s Construction Engineering and Management Program. The man of the hour was Trench Shoring's Jason Donnelly.
The award text says it all: “Presented with Thanks and Gratitude
in memory of Esby Young and to William Young and the
Young Family for Their Dedication To and Service On Behalf of
the Construction Industry Over the Past 65 Years.”
EGCA’s
Scholarship Awards Program honors five students and the one and only
Bill Connelly.
Rodger Fosbinder of Hawthorne Rent-It, announced the
name of this year’s honoree, Bill Connelly, founder of W.R. Connelly,
Inc.
“This is the fun part,”
Fosbinder began. In explaining the award’s criteria, Rodger noted the
award is meant to honor “an individual who has made a significant
contribution to the San Diego construction industry.” With that, Rodger
brought Gus Connelly, president of W.R. Connelly Inc., to the podium.
Tom
Hawthorne, whose modesty and just-one-of the-guys demeanor hides the
countless contributions he has made to San Diego’s construction
industry, received the EGCA Scholarship Committee’s Honoree Award in
recognition of a career of unprecedented achievement.
Seeds
for the EGCA Foundation were planted early in 2003 when members of the
Engineering and General Contractors Association of San Diego (the
contractors and support services building roadways, streets and
municipal underground infrastructure like water and sewers) launched a
fund-raising program to provide three annual scholarships to the
children of construction workers of EGCA member firms. The goal of raising
$100,000 was exceeded by over 25% by year’s end, and in June, 2004, the
first of these scholarships were awarded.
