Roadmap for Small and Emerging Contractors in San Diego County

third Floor—assemble your business team
Step 16. Sign up for insurance

Ouch!  This will be tricky. The insurance market is in turmoil:  carriers are few and prices are high.

Types you will need:

  • General liability insurance (you’ll pay a minimum price and then get audited at the end of the year and pay a percentage of your gross sales).

  • Workers compensation insurance – CSLB will discipline you if you hire people without carrying it. Don’t take foolish risks.
  • Auto insurance.

Some projects may require specialty insurance programs such as Sparta insurance or OCIP (Owner Controlled Insurance Program). Contact your insurance agent for more information on these programs.

Your Association will likely be the best source of referrals for good insurance agents – plus they are already used to dealing with people in your business so they can be good guides. Talk to other Association members for referrals.
