Roadmap for Small and Emerging Contractors in San Diego County

third Floor—assemble your business team
Step 20. Keep getting more training

Review your personal and employee training plans again. Make sure you’re not slacking off on your education and training. The “School of Hard Knocks” has the highest tuition in the country. It is very easy to make a five-digit mistake in construction – a mistake you could have avoided with a three-digit class.

Attend training classes offered by:

  • Your associations

  • Colleges and universities including SDSU and UCSD extension and local community colleges

  • Private institutes like www.SaddleIsland.com and www.PowerSummit.com

  • Online internet-based training from www.constructionclasses.com

  • The City of San Diego is researching and publishing an extensive and well-researched Construction Training Reference list.

Continue to train YOURSELF in management and business:

  • Read a business management book every month or so (ask association members what they’ve read lately or check Amazon.com’s listings and shop for what interests you)

  • Attend association management training workshops – some associations have retreats focusing on improving business and management skills

  • Check out private institutes like those cited above.
