Roadmap for Small and Emerging Contractors in San Diego County

Ground Floor—Look Before You Leap
Step 4. Study and pass the CSLB license exams

For information and application forms: www.cslb.ca.gov – most questions can be answered there 24/7, including how to start the process, how to obtain needed forms, and then how to track the progress of your submitted application. Start early; the application process can easily take six months and contracting without a license can be a felony.

Suggestion:  work through various vendors who help prepare for exams in classroom setting or using recorded and printed materials. Google the term (i.e., search on www.google.com) “contractors license California” to find dozens of companies who specialize in helping you study for and pass the various exams you may need to take. One such local San Diego firm is Golden State Contractor Schools with offices in San Diego (619-296-9811) and Vista (760-598-9330) – no endorsement implied.

Remember:  to qualify to take any California contractors exam you must have at least FOUR YEARS prior journeyman experience in the field, which must be substantiated by affidavits from individuals who have direct knowledge of your work experience.
