Recommended:
journeyman level with mastery of one or more trades and experience
supervising staff and projects at least at the foreman or
superintendent level.It is possible
to run a general contracting company without being proficient in a
trade, but your risks and costs increase (you know less and can’t do
the work yourself when you have to, and may not recognize when
employees are performing poor quality or wasting resources) and you
need to make up for lack of trade knowledge with exceptional
business skills and capital.
In any event, to
qualify to take any California contractors exam (see
step #5)
you will need at least FOUR YEARS prior experience in the field,
which must be substantiated by affidavits from other contractors.
